The process behind the experimental pieces in the Mapa de Suelos (“soil map”) series mirrors the complexity of the natural topographies they depict. Labor-intensive traditional techniques are employed to achieve the nearly invisible joints. The patterns are based on aerial views of the Andes and the Amazon, landscapes that Freyre is drawn to both visually and ancestrally: His family has roots in the country’s highlands.
