Discover How Art Deco Elegance Transforms A Madrid Residence

Some people want to be surrounded by their inspirations. This was certainly true for an economist with a passion for literature and Art Deco, who desired a renovation of their home in central Madrid. They tapped Madrid-based De la Villa Studio, a rising firm led by architects Miguel Otero and Juan Esteve, with interior designer Alberto Mirror. The 1,450-square-foot apartment needed a complete renovation and reimagining, with architectural detailing and new furnishings. De la Villa Studio considered every detail and added many custom elements.

The library became the center of the residence. The client’s extensive collection of books was set into varnished oak shelving, with lower cabinets upholstered in leather. An aged, mirrored ceiling reflects the room’s elements. De la Villa felt that mirrors on the ceilings would add “spaciousness and brightness.”

The room’s reading nook is served by an Eames lounge chair, a 265 wall lamp by Paolo Rizzatto for Flos, and a painting by Sabine Finkenauer from Alzueta Gallery. The library also functions as a dining area, with oak dining chairs and seats upholstered in gazelle leather. A balcony brings in natural light, one of several balconies in the apartment.

The design firm added numerous custom elements in stone, linen, wood, and other materials. Flooring in the entry, bathroom, and kitchen is in geometrics designed by the firm to complement the space. Numerous furniture pieces are custom as well, including the living room’s bronze-smoked glass coffee tables with honed travertine. Some detailing designed by the firm nods directly to Art Deco, such as arches on the bronze-and-glass doors in the bathroom. In the bedroom, oak sliding doors were also custom-designed in a nod to the era.
